General questions

How does the Deeper Smart Sonar work?

SONAR stands for SOund NAvigation Ranging. A sonar device sends pulses of sound waves down through the water. When these pulses hit objects like fish, vegetation or the bottom, they are reflected back to the surface. The sonar device measures how long it takes for the sound wave to travel down, hit an object and then bounce back up. Once a returning pulse is received, another one is sent out. Because sound waves travel at roughly one mile a second in water, sonars can send multiple pulses per se...

Why do I need to charge my Deeper when I am not using it?

All Deeper Smart Sonars are powered by a lithium-ion battery, and charging these batteries regularly will extend their life. We recommend charging Fishfinder 3.0 at least once every 2 months, and PRO / PRO+ / Start / CHIRP+ models at least once every 6 months even when you don't use them.

Can I use Deeper if its body is damaged?

Deeper has a ruggedized casing on all sonars to ensure they can withstand rough conditions. However, damage can occur if the device hits or is dropped on a hard surface. If you can see visible damage on the Deeper body or the orange rubber seal, do not use the device, as further usage could damage the internal electronic components. Please contact our support team (support@deeper.eu) (mailto:support@deeper.eu)) for assistance.

Will a Deeper Smart Sonar work without any cellular data / internet connection?

Yes, all Deeper Smart Sonar devices will work wherever you are. They do not require any kind of internet or cell connection in order to be used. However, you will need Internet to install the Deeper application on your smart device (smartphone or tablet). Please note that some application functions such as Weather forecast, Maps or ice hole marking do require an internet and GPS connection on your phone. In case you are fishing in an area with no internet connection, you can pre-download offli...

Are there any accessories available for the Deeper smart sonar?

Yes, there is a range of accessories for different styles of fishing. For shore anglers, a Smartphone Mount (https://deepersonar.com/en/smartphone-mount/) is a great option to mount your smartphone to your rod so that you wouldn't need to hold your phone. For boat anglers, the Flexible Arm (https://deepersonar.com/en/flexible-arm/) lets you mount your smart sonar to your kayak or boat, so it can constantly take readings while you paddle which is perfect for bathymetric mapping. During ice fis...

Can Deeper Smart Sonars work underwater?

Deeper smart sonars are designed to float on the surface of the water, and we don’t recommend submerging the device (it is waterproof up to 1 meter). Of course, it may get submerged briefly if the water is rough, and this shouldn’t affect the performance of the device. It records information for 5 seconds while underwater. After resurfacing, it transfers that data back to your phone.

Which fishing line is optimal for casting the Deeper Smart Sonar?

Deeper Smart Sonar PRO models weight just 3.5 oz / 100 grams. Deeper CHIRP models weight 3.2 oz / 90 grams. Deeper Start weights 2.3 oz / 65 grams. They have been designed to work with standard line and tackle, and any rod or line except micro-fishing equipment should be suitable for use. If you’re not sure, any tackle shop will be able to advise you on suitable fishing line to use with a Deeper Smart Sonar. We've tested a range of different lines , and best performing ones are the followin...

Do I need to have two rods to cast my Deeper smart sonar?

No, it is not necessary. Some anglers choose to fish with two rods while using their Deeper smart sonar – with one rod they cast out their Deeper and use it to monitor underwater activity, and with the other rod they cast their bait or jig. If you choose to use a single rod, you can use a swivel attachment and easily switch between the Deeper and your bait.

Why does my Deeper Smart Sonar come with two bolts in the package? How do I use them? (Deeper PRO / PRO+ / CHIRP models)

One of the bolts is a spare. So, use only one bolt to attach your Deeper smart sonar, and keep the other in your tackle box as a spare. Moreover, please make sure you are using the right attachment position for the line, to ensure the stability of the device when it is reeled back. When you fish from the dock or bridge, screw your attachment bolt to the middle hole. Use the bottom one, if you're fishing from the shore. It is important that your Deeper does not tilt when trolled. When it tilts, ...

What is the difference between Narrow and Wide beams of the Deeper Sonar? (Deeper PRO / PRO+ / CHIRP models)

Sonars send out pulses of ultrasound to locate objects. Sound travels in waves, not straight lines, and these waves expand in cones, getting wider and wider. Most sonars can control the range of the sound wave cone by changing the scanning beam frequency. This is important because in different fishing situations different scanning beams will be more or less effective. Wide beam scanning (Deeper PRO/PRO+ 55° angle; Deeper CHIRP 47° angle) is good for quickly scanning large areas and getting ove...

Can I use my Deeper Smart Sonar for ice fishing?

Deeper 3.0 / PRO / PRO+ / CHIRP models have been specifically engineered for ice fishing use, and there is an ice fishing mode on the app. The specially designed durable casing has been ruggedized to withstand harsh conditions, allowing Deeper sonars to operate perfectly in temperatures as low as -4 F / - 20 C. For ice-fishing, select the Ice Fishing mode in the Deeper App. Deeper Start is not designed to be used for ice fishing, and the optimal operational temperature of this model is 0°C to 4...

Is Deeper resistant to salt water and shocks/bumps?

Yes, it is. Deeper has been designed for extensive outdoor use in a range of conditions and climates. It is ruggedized, so it is resistant to bumps and even pike attacks. Even so, please avoid physically damaging your Deeper - very strong physical impact can damage its internal electronics. Deeper models are water resistant up to a depth of 1 meter (3.2 ft). It will also work just fine in salt water, but it is advised to clean the device with salt-free water and then dry it off after every fi...

Will I be able to see any sonar readings if the depth I'm scanning exceeds the maximum depth range of my Deeper Sonar?

The sonar signal has to reflect from the bottom and go back to the sonar unit in order for it to process the data - this is the way sonars work. In case the factual depth of the area you're scanning exceeds the maximum depth range of your Deeper Sonar, no sonar data will be shown and you'll see an error message "too shallow or too deep" The maximum scanning depth of Deeper PRO and PRO+ models is 260 ft./80 meters, so they will not work in waters that are deeper than that - simply because the so...

I've lost my Deeper Sonar. What do I do?

If you lose your Deeper Sonar, or if it is stolen from you - please contact Deeper Support immediately at support@deeper.eu (mailto:support@deeper.eu) In your email, please indicate the serial number of your Deeper, or an email under which your Fish Deeper app account is registered. We will do our best to trace your missing sonar.

Can I spot a thermocline layer using the Deeper?

Yes, Deeper PRO and CHIRP models are sensitive enough to spot the thermocline (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermocline) layer. In case you discover it, it will be shown on the sonar screen as a faint horizontal line of noise, and clutter of small dots beneath the line. If you are using Deeper PRO or PRO+, use Narrow beam setting and >75% sensitivity if you're specifically looking for the thermocline. Your smart imaging setting must also be set to Detailed. Here's how a thermocline layer lo...

My Deeper sonar makes a clicking noise when placed in water. Is this normal?

Yes, it is normal, because the Deeper Smart Sonar emits ultra-sound to scan the bottom. If you're using a Wide beam setting, such clicking sounds are more noticeable when you first place the Deeper sonar in the water. If you're using a Narrow beam, you will not hear such noises because of the higher frequency of the ultrasound.

Does the Deeper sonar scare or harm fishes in any way?

As the recent research shows, military sonars can negatively affect marine wildlife that use biological sonars for navigation, like dolphins and whales. But it is very important to distinguish military sonar technology and fish finder sonar technology because there are major differences in frequencies and dB output. Military sonars tend to operate at 1kHz-10kHz frequencies which is very loud, while Deeper operates at 90-290 kHz. Such frequency of sound is literally undetectable by humans, mar...
