This guide covers everything you need to know to get the most out of your Deeper MAX for shore or pier fishing. Learn how to securely attach and cast your device, select the right rod and line, optimize your sonar settings, interpret scan results, and avoid common pitfalls. You’ll also get tips for scanning different types of water and using the Fish Deeper app to build detailed bathymetric maps of your fishing spots.
Attaching Deeper MAX for Shore and Pier Fishing.
Shore (bank) fishing. Always use the bottom attachment point.
Fishing from a dock or pier. Use the middle attachment point.
The correct attachment bolt position is very important for reading quality. When retrieving the sonar after casting, the proper attachment ensures the sonar is stable in the water and provides the best possible readings. Screw the attachment bolt firmly into the selected position and always check that it is secure before casting. Only one attachment point should be used - never install bolts in more than one position at the same time.
Recommended Rod, Line, and Casting Technique.
Rod. Use a medium-heavy action rod or carp rod. If you prefer distance or stronger casting, a heavy action rod can be used. The recommended rod casting weight is over 80 g. If you are using a rod with a lower casting weight, make shorter casts to avoid damaging the rod.
Casting technique. With a heavy action rod, you can use an overhead cast for distance. With a medium action rod, use a side cast technique for better control and to protect the rod.
Line. Use monofilament or braided line with a minimum breaking strain of 8 kg (17 lb). Always inspect your line for wear before every session and use a strong, reliable knot such as a Palomar or Uni knot.
Helpful accessories:
Bank stick. For hands-free phone operation and better comfort.
Smartphone mount. Secure your device to your rod for safety and visibility.
Recommended Sonar Settings for Shore Fishing.
Always select Shore (Bank) mode for shore or pier fishing. This mode uses the internal GPS in your Deeper MAX for bathymetric mapping.
Sonar display. Select Detailed (Raw) mode for the most information on structure, bottom hardness, and real fish arches.
Beam angle selection.
- Wide beam (47°). Best for quickly scanning large areas and locating the general presence of fish. Limitation: Lower detail and accuracy. Not recommended for sizing fish or for bathymetric mapping.
- Note: Wide beam is not suited for scanning shallow water (less than 2-5 m / 7-16 ft). For shallow water, switch to Narrow beam.
- Mid (20°) or Narrow (7°) beam. Use for precise fish identification and bathymetric mapping. Mid/narrow beams show more detail and let you estimate fish size accurately, but cover a smaller area.
- Note: Narrow beams are sensitive to water disturbance - choppy conditions may cause visual artifacts.
Fish Icons. Set OFF for more accurate interpretation. For detailed guidance on interpreting sonar returns, see our online guide: How to read a CHIRP sonar fish finder.
Sensitivity. Start at 70–100%. Reduce if the water is murky or you are only targeting large fish.
Why these settings matter. Use wide beam to quickly find areas with fish or features. Switch to mid or narrow beam for detailed scanning or mapping.
How to Reel In for Best Results.
Reel in slowly. Retrieving too quickly can cause the sonar to rock or tilt, making readings less accurate.
Maintain a steady speed. Consistent reeling ensures the sonar produces the most reliable data while scanning.
Bathymetry (Depth Map) Creation and Update in Shore Mode.
Deeper MAX does not show live position on the map during scanning.
The bathymetric map is updated only after you retrieve your sonar from the water.
When the device is out of the water, the Fish Deeper app processes your scan and updates the map - usually within a few seconds.
Scanning Strategy: Casting for Lakes and River Use.
Lakes. Use a fan-shaped casting pattern from your spot on the shore. Cast at different angles to build a complete picture of what’s underwater, identify drop-offs, and find productive fishing spots.
Rivers. Cast upstream and let the current carry your Deeper MAX downstream to naturally scan the riverbed and observe depth changes along the current.
How to avoid losing your Deeper MAX.
Always check your knots and line before every cast.
Avoid fishing in dense weed beds, overhanging branches, or near submerged obstacles.
Use the correct attachment point for your situation - bottom for shore, middle for pier.
Retrieve your device at a steady pace and keep tension on the line.
Use a shock leader if you are fishing in waters with aggressive predatory fish - this will help prevent your line from being bitten through.
If you want extra protection against loss, you can purchase Premium+ Loss Protection. This feature is available in the Fish Deeper app and provides coverage if your sonar is lost during use, plus other Premium+ benefits like advanced mapping and community fishing maps.
Summary & Key Reminders
Always use the bottom attachment point for shore, middle for dock/pier.
Set up your sonar: Detailed display, correct beam angle for the job, Fish Icons OFF.
Reel in slow and steady for the most reliable readings.
Bathymetry updates only after retrieval - not live during scan.
Inspect all tackle and attachment points for safety before every use.
