Inaccurate sonar readings

Usually incorrect readings (depth, fish, temperature) are caused by conditions of usage or improper use of the device.

Incorrect readings may include:

  • Incorrect depth measurements;
  • Sonar noise - clutter of small dots or lines on the sonar screen;
  • Abnormal amount of fish detection (if Fish Icons are enabled);
  • “Too shallow or too deep” message, even though the depth is sufficient for scanning.

Such issues can appear when ultra-sound cone of the Deeper is not directed at the bottom of the lake, and scans the side of the lake instead. For example, just after the Deeper hits the water after being cast, or when there are heavy waves. Deeper App will display the correct depth as soon as unit stabilizes in the water, resulting in the sonar cone to point directly downwards.

When casting with a fishing rod, make sure you are using the right attachment position for the line, to ensure the stability of the device when it is reeled back. When you fish from the dock or bridge, screw your attachment bolt to the middle hole. Use the bottom one, if you're fishing from the shore. It is important that your Deeper does not tilt when trolled. When it tilts, it scans the water surface rather than the bottom, therefore causing connectivity and readings issues. Reel in the device at a slow and steady pace.

If you have the Deeper attached to a vessel, it is important to check the positioning of the device, and ensure that it is not positioned too close to the border of the vessel. If it is positioned too close, the ultra-sound emitted by the Deeper will reflect from the border, causing incorrect readings to appear. The very bottom of the device should point onto the bottom of the lake. For best quality of sonar readings, it is advised to use a Flexible Arm Mount.

Sensitivity in algae-heavy or murky waters

Adjusting the sensitivity setting (PRO/CHIRP models) can help to reduce sonar clutter and noises caused by murky water and algae. Reduce the sensitivity slowly until the screen is free of clutter and small dots.

Too shallow or too deep error message

If you constantly see the "too shallow or too deep" message, please check whether the depth is sufficient for the device to work. Deeper 3.0 / PRO / PRO+ models require at least 2 ft. (0.5 m.) of depth to operate when using the Narrow beam, and at least 4 ft. (1.3 m.) when using the Wide beam.

Deeper Start requires at least 2 ft. (0.5 m.) in order to operate.

Deeper CHIRP+ requires 6 in (0.15 m.) of depth in order to operate, if you are using High CHIRP beam.

Furthermore, please keep the Deeper app updated to the latest version.
